The Roleandro LED Grow Light (model HY-MD-D169-S-75W-RB-US) was at the top of our price range at $29.99, but at the time we purchased it offered a 10% off coupon, which edged it out in front of its nearest competitors. It was ranked 52 on Amazon’s list of 100 best-selling LED plant grow lights, and had a 4.4 out of five review rating.1
This is a Blue/Red spectrum plant grow light, but the manufacturer also claims it offers light in the “6000-6500k wave band.” I assume the “k” in this reference is to “Kelvin,” a measurement of color “temperature,” where 6,000-6,500 would be a bluish white color similar to sunlight. However, of the 169 LEDs featured on this light, 117 are red and 52 blue, a 2.25:1 ratio of red:blue with no white LEDs. The graphic spectral analysis by Roleadro (Figure 1) shows the blue LEDs emitting a slightly tighter range of light than the Shengsite plant grow, from 460 to 465 nanometers, while the red LEDs emit a broader spectrum than the Shengsite light, from 620 to 740 nanometer wavelength, and there is also far more of the green spectrum represented on the graph. The LEDs have a 50,000 hour lifespan, and Roleandro offers a 30 month warranty and 30 day return period.
This is a square panel plant grow light, measuring at 10.87 inches a side, still not the ideal rectangular shape, but the limits of our project require some concessions. The shell housing the bulbs is aluminum and small heat sinks are provided for each LED to dissipate heat. The power “driver” for the LEDs is separate from the light fixture, so heat from it will not affect the LEDs. These materials and construction techniques are definitely a step up from the bottom end of our price range.
The PPFD is not listed, however the amount of light emitted is reported as 4546.2 Lux. Without providing the conditions under which this measurement was taken is really meaningless. We made our readings (Figure 2) with our LED light meter. Engineers at Reed Instruments suggest adding the red and blue readings and creating an average for an accurate reading in lux. There are a number of calculators online that can convert that lux reading to Photosynthetic Photo Flux Density (PPFD) readings.
